Artist Bio
Born in 1919 to Italian parents in New York, Dante Liberi was an artist whose diverse experiences and influences shaped his distinctive style.
His artistic journey began under the tutelage of his father, a caricaturist, and continued through his association with the Abracheff School, led by Bulgarian artist Nikola Abracheff. Liberi's work reflects the impact of masters like Marino Marini, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Henri Matisse, blending elements of Impressionism and Expressionism.
Liberi's career encompassed extensive experience in scenic painting, contributing to productions for the New York Theater, the Joffrey Ballet, the New York City Ballet, and creating original sets for "Sesame Street."
His dual heritage fostered strong personal and artistic ties to both the United States and Italy, with a particular affinity for Tuscany, where he observed that "art is everywhere."
A master draftsman, Liberi emphasized the importance of drawing in his creative process, aiming to produce works that resonate with both artists and art enthusiasts. His vibrant use of color and preference for oil painting allowed him to explore a wide range of techniques, expressing emotion and providing aesthetic pleasure.
Liberi's art is characterized by expressive, recognizable subjects—children, flowers, horses, and nudes—drawn from his daily life. He viewed art as a vital creative activity, essential for meaningful existence, focusing on technical mastery to convey beauty and emotion. His work, autobiographical in nature, exudes inner strength, harmony, serenity, and vitality, embodying his optimistic outlook on life.
Dante Liberi passed away in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence that continues to inspire and captivate audiences.
